马来西亚陈嘉庚基金 Tan Kah Kee Foundation
Tan Kah Kee (1874-1961) was an outstanding leader of the Malaysia’s and Singapore’s Chinese community in the early 20th century. He came from JiMei, Fujian, China to Singapore to do business with his father when he was 17 years old. He then became the world-renowned first generation of Chinese manufacturer due to his distinct wisdom and courage. At that time, Tan Kah Kee established a large enterprise group in various countries across the world, spanning industry, commerce, newspapers, plantation and shipping, and made significant contributions to the early economic and social development of Malaysia’s and Singapore’s Chinese society.
Tan Kah Kee wore many hats such as business tycoon, philanthropist, educationalist and community leader. He advocated that “Education is the foundation of the country, and revitalise the school is the duty as a citizen”. He had devoted himself to the establishment of education and social welfare takings throughout his life and had always practiced the motto of “sincerity and perseverance”.
Tan Kah Kee contributed a lot to the social development and educational development in Southeast Asia. However his long-term dedication and commendable character seems to have been forgotten in today's context, where it has been absent from people’s lips and the mainstream values of today's society. Malaysia is an important settlement for overseas Chinese housing up to seven million overseas Chinese. As national sentiment increasingly become frail and traditional values are gradually taken over by international trends, it seems that it is time to reintroduce the great spirit and thought of Tan Kah Kee to bring out its far-reaching significance.
In June 2011, Malaysian Chinese businessman and cultural and educational advocates, Tan Kai Hee and Tan Yew Sing, felt that Tan Kah Kee’s spirit has declined tremendously and so initiated the idea of establishing the Tan Kah Kee Foundation. Shortly after the launch of the Foundation, they received strong support from Tan Sri Lim Gait Tong and Dato’ Ir Steve Chong Yoon On, which four of them became directors of early Tan Kah Kee Foundation. From there they hit it off and established Tan Kah Kee Foundation formally on the 50th anniversary of the death of Tan Kah Kee. In the early days, the Preparatory Committee was committed to various work and activities and at the same time building Tan Kah Kee Memorial Malaysia to rejuvenate the spirit of Tan Kah Kee.
In April 2013, the Tan Kah Kee Foundation was registered and formally established. Then in the same year on 6th of October, Tan Kah Kee Memorial Malaysia was officially ready to raise the curtain. It was located at the 3rd floor of The Kuala Lumpur & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall. This is the first memorial hall with Tan Kah Kee’s theme in Malaysia and even in Southeast Asia. The memorial hall will display Tan’s life stories with different theme of Tan Kah Kee Memorial Special Exhibition for free to the public.
